How to Help Kids Practise Times Tables at Home

Helping kids practise times tables at home does not need to be stressful. With short, fun and regular practice, children can build confidence and improve multiplication recall over time.

Keep times table practice short and positive

One of the best ways to help kids practise times tables at home is to keep practice short. A few focused minutes each day can be much better than one long session that feels tiring or frustrating.

The goal is to help children feel successful. When practice feels calm and achievable, kids are more likely to keep trying and build confidence.

Simple tip: Start with 5 minutes of practice. Stop while your child still feels positive, rather than waiting until they are tired or upset.

Use games instead of pressure

Times tables need repetition, but repetition does not have to mean boring worksheets. Games can help children practise facts again and again while still feeling motivated.

Quick multiplication games can also help kids see their progress. Beating a personal best, earning rewards or completing a challenge can make practice feel more like play.

1. Start small

Choose one times table or a small group of facts to practise first.

2. Practise often

Short practice sessions across the week help facts stick.

3. Celebrate progress

Praise effort, speed improvements and confidence, not just correct answers.

Make practice part of a routine

A simple routine can make times table practice easier to manage at home. Try linking practice to something your child already does each day, such as after breakfast, after school, or before screen time.

The routine does not need to be complicated. A short daily rhythm can help children know what to expect and reduce arguments about maths practice.

Try different ways to remember facts

Children learn in different ways. Some kids remember facts through games, some through songs, some through patterns and some through movement.

  • Use times table songs to support memory
  • Play quick online multiplication games
  • Say facts aloud together
  • Look for patterns in answers
  • Use skip counting to build confidence
  • Focus on one table before moving to the next
Helpful idea: If your child is stuck, slow it down. Confidence grows when children feel safe to make mistakes and try again.

How TimesBlitz can help at home

TimesBlitz is designed to make multiplication practice feel fun, quick and rewarding. Kids can play short times table games, practise facts, earn Blitz Bucks and work towards personal best scores.

Parents can start with the free x1 games, then unlock x2–x12 when their child is ready for more practice.

A simple home practice plan

  • Monday: Play one short times table game
  • Tuesday: Listen to a times table song
  • Wednesday: Practise one table for 5 minutes
  • Thursday: Try to beat a personal best
  • Friday: Celebrate progress and play a favourite game

The most important thing is consistency. Short, regular and positive practice can make a big difference over time.
